General VSP Library Policies
The VSP primary/middle school library is in the process of changing to a cataloguing system that operates on organizing books by genre instead of decimal-based classification. Genre-based classification is well-suited for younger children and allows for more autonomy when searching and re-shelving titles.
The current policy for book-lending in the primary school is as follows:
A student is allowed to borrow/take home one book at any given time. Ideally, this will allow the student one week access to the book until the following week's library period. If the student fails to return a library book, he or she will not be allowed to check out another book until the outstanding loan is settled. There is therefore a flexible “time limit” on book returns, but in its place is a system that emphasizes personal responsibility and reasonable limitations. After a one-month period, a book will automatically be flagged and the librarian will follow up with the student who has borrowed the flagged book in order to ensure that it has not been lost or damaged.
Middle School students are allowed up to three books at any given time, but are otherwise subject to the same return policy as primary students.
The current policy for the loss of a book and book destruction is as follows:
The loss of any VSP Library property and/or irreparable damage of said property will be treated comparably. Upon receipt of damaged books or the inability of a student to return a borrowed book, the librarian will complete a “Lost or Damaged Book” form, which will include the cost of replacing the book that was lost or destroyed. This form will subsequently be given to the appropriate homeroom teacher, who will then contact the parent of the child responsible for the loss. The parent will be asked to reimburse VSP for said loss.
The current policy for misbehavior and other discipline-related issues is as follows:
Any student in primary or middle school found to be in violation of the any of the school’s fundamental or library-specific rules (posted at the library’s entrance) are subject to disciplinary action at the discretion of the librarian. The student in violation will be given a single verbal warning, followed by the loss of borrowing privileges for that particular week, and in cases of a third offense, a written disciplinary report will be made. The disciplinary report will detail the name of the student, the time of the violation, and a detailed description of the incident. This disciplinary form will then be given to the appropriate homeroom teacher, who will then have facultative freedom to pursue further disciplinary action.
